KNUTSFORD FC have bagged themselves another semi-final place.

Thanks to a comfortable 4-0 win at Whitegate United on Saturday, Reds are through to the last four of Mid Cheshire District Cup.

This hands them a tie away to in-form new side Winsford Town on Saturday, March 9.

Winsford, who have former Witton Albion striker Rob Hopley as their player-manager and ex- Walsall, Coventry City, Celtic, Burnley, Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Wigan Athletic centre-half Danny Fox in their ranks, are currently leading Cheshire League Two and look set for promotion in their debut campaign.

The week before that date, Knutsford visit Old Alts in the semi-finals of the Cheshire Amateur Cup.

They missed two penalties against Whitegate, although it made no difference to the outcome.

Reds were also missing four regulars and did not play particularly well, but did enough in a game that was all one-way traffic.

When a Whitegate defender handled the ball in the box from a ninth-minute corner Greg Mathers stepped up to take the penalty but he fired high over the bar.

Mathers picked up an injury soon after this to be replaced by Jonny Cavanagh, with Matt Mountney moving to centre forward, but Knutsford were struggling to find the breakthrough at that stage.

The first goal finally came on the 30th minute when Jimmy Woodward cut inside from the right and hit a left foot curler into the top right corner.

It was the spark for a rally, because Reds scored twice more before the break.

Mountney was to a long ball from Woodward and slotted home well on 42 minutes and then he fed Harrison Woolley on the left who cut inside to finish off well.

It was a second half of poor quality and missed chances on a pitch that was very bobbly and difficult for passing.

A fourth goal eventually came through Mountney, who spun and shot home in the box on 78 minutes.

There was still time for Knutsford’s second penalty miss after Mason Gunter-Jones was brought down in the box.

Mountney was on a hat-trick but hit the ball centrally into the goalkeeper’s hands.

Knutsford: Smith, Maunder, Sheldon, Brotherton, Fregapane, Kennedy (Gunter), Davis, Mountney, Woodward, Mathers (Cavanagh), Woolley.

Reds are due to host Wythenshawe in Cheshire League One at Manchester Road on Saturday, kick-off 2pm.
