JACK Bushell, a member at Mere, defended a Cheshire Junior Merit title he won for the first time last season.

And the Knutsford youngster was made to work for his win at Helsby, where his opponents in both the last eight and the semi finals both scored 20.

He then edged out Matt Worden (Tarvin) 21-19 in a close final.

Jack's brother, Mark, bowed out in the last 16 following a 21-20 reverse against county teammate Mike Roberts (Orford Memorial).

Bushell's reward is a place in the main draw at the British Junior Individual Merit, scheduled this year to take place at Walsgrave Bowling Club in Warwickshire, next month.

He was beaten in the first round at the 2015 edition.

Meanwhile Bushell will be back on duty for Cheshire this weekend when they conclude their campaign in the British Junior County Championship.

Already eliminated after losing their first two group-stage fixtures, they take on Staffordshire.
