FOUR former champions are among the contenders to win the Guardian Cup at Owley Wood.
Glynn Cookson, the most decorated player in the competition’s history with 10 finals-night wins, resumes his bid to add to that tally against Lee Cadman.
Cadman, from Crosstown, lost 21-16 to Cookson on home turf when Wharton Cons A visited the Knutsford club in May.
Thomas Vickers (Wharton Cons), who faces Castle Private’s Paul Mackie, will travel to Weaverham as the form player.
He won the Cheshire Senior Merit for the first time last month, less than 48 hours after beating Rob Winnington (Castle) in the Roberts Bakery Cup final.
Those two could collide again in the semi finals, if Winnington can overcome Daniel Nixon for a second successive year.
He told the Guardian, after losing 21-12 to Vickers at Spinner & Bergamot, that he felt a major singles title success was within his reach after a return to top form.
“I’ve got down to the last two a couple of times in the past year or so, and my confidence is high,” he added.
The other quarter-finals tie pits Kevin Duncalf (Castle Private) against Alan Vickers (Wharton Cons), a previous winner back in 1998.
On the opposite side of the draw to his son, Vickers cannot face Thomas unless they both reach the final.
Friday’s final is scheduled to start at 6.45pm.
Adults pay £1 to watch the action.
