Holmes Chapel 64 Sandbach 4ths 5

HOLMES Chapel continued their fine form from last year with a convincing win over Sandbach’s fourth string on Saturday.

Their lead at the North West Intermediate League Division Five South summit is worth five points over closest rivals Congleton seconds as a result.

Centre Jim Moss provided a breakthrough after an impressive move from the hosts’ backline at Station Road.

Smart kicking from fly half Mike Lightfoot also enabled winger Harry Jeanes and full back Jed Wragg to score tries in a one-sided first half.

Chapel utilised their scrum and lineouts, as well as winning opposition ball at set pieces, to reach the break 50-0 ahead.

The visitors claimed an unconverted try after the break, while ill-discipline from both sides prompted the referee to send players to the sin bin.

Young prop Dave Steer was shown a yellow card, while Wragg was punished in the same way for dissent.

“We were very happy with our first half performance and each and every player showed the commitment to the Chapel cause that we have come to expect,” said vice captain Dom Moss afterwards.

“We let off in the second half and this is something that we will work on correcting for our next game.

“A huge amount of players have made themselves available, which is great.”

Prop Will Mitchell received the man of the match award following another superb display.

Chapel host Acton Nomads on Saturday, kick off 2.15pm.
