Wallasey 59 Knutsford 7

KNUTSFORD, able to field only 13 players after illness ruled out a number of regulars, could not stop second-placed Wallasey from continuing their promotion charge.

Blues battled well initially, restricting the home team to two tries during the early exchanges.

Resolute defending from the visitors’ pack enabled them to turnover possession more often than their opponents expected, leaving them struggling in the set piece.

A break from Frazer Crawford almost led to a try at the other end, only for the ball to bounce into touch.

Scrum half Ross Collison limped off before the break with a groin injury, paving the way for Wallasey to add a third converted try.

Knutsford spent the second period attempting to limit any damage, playing rugby when they could.

Their hosts only assumed control once Blues began to tire, though their spirit was rewarded when winger Stefano Spinola crashed over for a try converted by Crawford.

“The players all performed well in difficult circumstances,” said Knutsford coach Geoff Crawford afterwards.

They return to action in South Lancs/Cheshire Division Three at seventh-placed Liverpool University this Saturday, kick off 2.15pm.

The players continue to train every Thursday at Booth’s Hall, from 7.30pm.
