TO commemorate the 150th anniversary of the famous Knutsford authoress, Elizabeth Gaskell, the Heritage Centre recently hosted an event in her honour.
On Saturday November 14, members of the public were invited to attend a tea party along with members of the Gaskell Society and Mrs Gaskell’s great-great-great-grandaughter Sarah Prince and her daughter, Eleanor.
There were readings about the life of the writer performed by voiceover artist, Delia Corrie and author Charles Foster.
“It went really well. The event was a sell-out,” said Val Bryant, trustee at the heritage centre. “It was a huge success. We all had a great time and there were delicious cakes hand-made by the Gaskell society.
“I think that Sarah really enjoyed it personally, and I think she felt it was worth coming along. The attendance was great, we couldn’t have got any more people.”
Sarah also attended the memorial service at Brook Street Unitarian Chapel on Sunday November 15 to lay a wreath on Elizabeth Gaskell’s grave.
Mrs Gaskell spent many years living in Knutsford before her death on November 12 1865.
