MOBBERLEY and Knutsford residents living near Manchester Airport's second runway could be kept awake at night while maintenance work takes place on runway one this week.

Runway one will be closed for two nights this week as staff make improvements.

For two nights between 10pm and 6am on Tuesday and Wednesday and Wednesday and Thursday all flights will take off and land from runway two.

The airport has said the noise will stay the same but will affect those living to the south of the airport towards Knutsford and Mobberley, which is closer to runway two.

In March, maintenance work took place on the eastern taxiways adjoining runway one.

Further closures are pencilled in for September 1 and 2; October 6 and 7; November 3 and 4; and December 1 and 2 but work could be delayed in the event of bad weather or low visibility.

A statement on the airport's website added: "During March 2015 we carried out maintenance work to the eastern taxiways adjoining Runway 1.

"Further work is required during 2015 and so dates each month have been identified between May and December. This has enabled a works programme to be planned and to provide advance notice; it is anticipated will be useful for our neighbours.

"During these nights of closure the routine maintenance tasks, necessary to keep our busiest runway and its adjoining taxiways in a good and safe condition, will also be carried out.

"As always, the prevailing weather conditions will determine in which direction aircraft will take-off and land. In the event of bad weather/low visibility, the works may be deferred and Runway 1 will be reinstated.

"Normal operations will resume at all other times.

"These changes are permitted within the terms of the planning permission for Runway 2."

The £20m refurbishment of runway one in 2010/11 saw work carried out that has reduced the need for maintenance but being in use 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week, the runway and its taxiways still need sprucing up from time to time.

Maintenance includes line painting, drain cleaning and surface inspection, while rubber deposits from tyres also need to be removed.
