A MOBBERLEY nursing home is stirring happy memories for residents with dementia with the help of some cuddly friends.

The Willows, on Faulkner’s Lane, have welcomed a variety of animals into the home as part of their innovative programme of activities.

Some of the animals that have paid a visit to the home include a chicken, dog, rabbit and a Shetland pony.

Linda Hutchings, activities co-ordinator at The Willows, spearheaded the project.

“Dementia residents benefit from having the feel, smell and touch of animals,” she said. “Many of the residents were farmers in their younger years and it brings them back.”

Linda had enlisted the help of Gabrielle Whittaker, who gives up her time to bring some of the animals to the home.

Mobberley resident Linda Rose brought her Shetland pony Brownie into the home and many residents scurried to brush his mane.

Linda added: “The reaction was amazing. One lady, who doesn’t speak or walk, was so overwhelmed by it she wanted to get out of her chair to brush him.

“The pony would have reminded her of the smell of the country and you could see her going back in time. It was an amazing experience.”

Linda is looking for some unusual animals that are comfortable and safe around people to come and visit the residents. If you can help, call Linda on 077 49920131.
