TERRA Nova School is embracing a fresh approach to teaching by branching out into the great outdoors.

The school, based near Jodrell, is set to become a Forest School and over the summer, completed the build of their first outdoor classroom and learning environment.

Year 3 Teacher Elanor Mitchell recently trained to deliver forest lessons and they are now underway at the school.

“At Terra Nova we feel that children should have the opportunity to explore and spend more time outdoors,” she said.

“In an increasingly risk free world we feel it is important that children learn how to cope with risks, know how to work safely and how to minimise dangers.

“As our children’s lives become increasingly busy we hope that our Forest School will act as a breathing space in already hectic lives. Children will be able to self-direct independent activities in the calm and tranquil surroundings of our woodland.”

Eventually the Forest School will see the introduction of two further outdoor classroom environments and shelters. Lessons will range from exploring the site and nature investigations, to shelter building and lighting fires.

Headmaster Mark Mitchell said: “We are incredibly excited about becoming a Forest School. Our site is absolutely perfect for it.

“At Terra Nova we pride ourselves not only in providing a solid academic grounding, but in educating the whole person. Forest schools lessons will further strengthen the breadth of our curriculum, and enable the children to develop many important skills.”
