KNUTSFORD'S market hall could be rebuilt and replaced by a two-storey building under plans being investigated by the town council.

The authority announced this week that it was continuing its commitment to improve transferred assets with minor improvements to the Market Hall on Silk Mill Street.

But at the same time town clerk Adam Keppel-Garner revealed councillors were investigation a remodelling of the current building.

Plans could include the creation of a new two-storey market hall to replace the existing, which would accommodate more traders and provide a quality modern market facility for the town.

“Knutsford’s status as a market town goes back centuries and the council is keen to see that we are once again known as a town with a fantastic market offering,” Adam said.

But before those plans are revealed the council announced a series of improvements for shoppers and traders.

A new noticeboard and local information display has already been installed at the entrance to the market, featuring the town guides, shopping maps and other attraction literature.

New poster boards have also been installed which will promote Knutsford events and activity within the market.

“The info display has proved popular already with the traders having to top up the town guides and shopping maps almost daily; it shows the market is a great place to promote what is happening in the town," Adam added.

“We are committed to working with the traders to promote the market as a key asset within the town.

"Traders highlighted the poor appearance of the front as one of their priorities for action which we are swiftly responding to.”

A new seating area is also to be created through the removal of a vacant counter; offering visitors to the market an area to sit, enjoy a cup of tea and plan the rest of their shopping in the town centre.

The front of the market will is also set to get a facelift with new signage and lighting.
